Re:       Back to the Future – SCWLA’s Annual Conference – October 23, 2015

Dear SCWLA members and friends,

If your ship never leaves the harbor, are you really a sailor?

While you are pondering this question, mark your calendars for SCWLA’s Annual Conference, October 23, 2015.  This year, we are going “Back to the Future” and returning to the site of SCWLA’s first convention, the USC Law School in Columbia, for a day filled with informative and provocative programs.  At a cost of only $195, SCWLA members will receive 6.25 hours of MCLE.

Now, this is not “your mother’s” convention.  We begin the day with sunrise yoga on the Statehouse grounds, followed by presentations on “Clients of the Future,” personal branding and “Delighting Your Clients.”  Our keynote speaker will be Debbie Epstein Henry, author of Finding Bliss:  Innovative Legal Models for Happy Clients and Happy Lawyers.  Everyone who registers for the convention will receive a copy of Ms. Henry’s book.

Tired of boring luncheons?  No problem.  This year, we are featuring a food truck rodeo, instead of a seated affair.  The lunch hour, accordingly, will be freed up for time in the “fun room,” where we will offer “Mentors on Demand,” financial counseling, and “Dress for Success.”

Need a new headshot?    You are in luck.  Get a free professional headshot, with hair and makeup artists assisting.   You can immediately use your new photo to update your SCWLA profile, thanks to our website guru, Jay Wingard of 18th Street Design, who will be in the “fun room” all day.  Everyone who updates their profile will receive a free SCWLA t-shirt.

And, if you can make it to Columbia the evening of October 22, you are invited to attend SCWLA’s annual Awards Night at the South Carolina State Museum.  This year, we will be presenting not only our Bissell Award, but also the first Jean Hoefer Toal Award.  The SCWLA Foundation will also present its Dicus Award that evening.  The festivities begin at 7:00 p.m.

I hope to see all of you at the Convention on October 23.  You can register at www.scbar.org/cle, by clicking “Calendar” and selecting this program.

With best personal wishes, and more to come.

Marguerite Willis

President

P.S. The answer to my question is “no.”  If you never leave the harbor, you never really develop the skills to face the storm or harness the wind.
