Marguerite's June President's Letter

Re:      Are We Having Fun, Yet?

Dear SCWLA members and friends,

“Midlife,” they say, “is where fun goes to die.”  Really?  Well, not if I have anything to do with it.

Dr. Marguerite here, with your “RX” for June:  Have more fun!  Sing, dance, drive a go-kart.  Have two big laughs tonight and call me in the morning.

It turns out that fun and games are good for you.  When women get out and “play,” they cope better with stress, which sets up protective mechanisms that contribute to health and wellbeing.  Apparently, when it comes to stress prevention, fun and play can create a suit of armor.

I do not know about you, but I could use a little more fun in my life.  So, here’s what I am going to do.  Watch a funny movie (in a real theater where other people are laughing, too); sort through my “photo drawer” and send silly pictures to my friends; and learn to kayak. I will also use the following responses to every possible question:  “Yes!, Sure!, You bet!, Why not?,” and “Sounds like fun.”  And I promise that every time my dog “Bojangles” wants to play with the tennis ball, I will play.

So, this month, SCWLA members, I want you to have some fun, too.  Call an old pal, have lunch with a new friend, gaze at the stars on a clear night.  Clean out your closets (well, maybe that is only fun for me), discover new jokes, paint your nails a bright tropical color.  Run like the wind and sleep like a baby.

Remember, every day you do not have fun is a day you will never get back.  So, smile, laugh, share and enjoy.

With best personal wishes, and more to come.

Marguerite Willis

President
