Mentoring
The purpose of the SCWLA Mentoring Program is to offer its members the opportunity to develop meaningful, one-on-one relationships with accomplished attorneys. Specifically, the Mentoring Program is intended to compliment any existing programs that the South Carolina Bar or the South Carolina Judicial Department have or may develop, and is intended to provide its membership with a formal structured program within which to carry out the organization's mission.
Mentoring Program Goals:
• Enhance the experience of attorneys by providing the tools and resources necessary for professional and personal development through mentoring services.
• Promote leadership, self-development, and professional competencies in attorneys.
• Promote civility among legal professionals.
• Build a sense of community within the legal profession.
• Foster the development of an attorney’s practical skills and increase their knowledge of legal customs.
• Create networking opportunities.
• Address practical as well as technical aspects of practicing law.
Expectations of Mentors:
• Devote the time and effort necessary to achieve the goals of the program.
• Commit to the program for at least 12 consecutive months.
• Meet at least quarterly with your protégé.
• Maintain communication with your protégé via e-mail or phone.
• Assist the protégé in understanding ethical and professional values.
• Act in good faith to guide your protégé.
Expectations of the Protégé:
• Devote the time and effort necessary to achieve the goals of the program.
• Commit to the program for at least 12 consecutive months.
• Meet at least quarterly with your mentor.
• Maintain communication with your mentor via e-mail or phone.
• Do not rely on the information provided to you by your mentor as a substitute for your own judgment, research, or legal opinions.
• Do not reveal to your mentor any confidential communications between you and your clients.
